Discover Granville Terre & Mer

For more than four centuries, Granville lived to the rhythm of the fishing campaigns to the Banks of Newfoundland and Saint-Miquelon. Resolutely turned towards the sea, it was also a corsair city whose sailors were among the most valiant of their time.

At the end of the 19th century, the sea baths attracted a large number of customers, the city being linked to Paris by the railway since 1870. Numerous Belle Epoque style villas were then built along the coast and mark a new facet of Granville’s personality: a seaside town of character.

The Upper Town

The historic district

Visit La Haute Ville de Granville, which is the historic district of Granville. It is composed of emblematic buildings such as the Grand’Porte, the Maison du Guet, the old barracks, the Notre-Dame du Cap-Lihou church, the bunkers, the lighthouse and the theater. Like the whole area, this charming district is bathed in a light that is both lively and soothing between its streets, its restaurants and its artists’ stores. All this with a splendid view of the sea!

On Place de l’Isthme, you will find the Richard Anacréon Museum of Modern Art, which offers the public permanent collections (paintings and books in original editions), reflecting the art of the first half of the 20th century, which can be viewed throughout the year.

Cultural mediation: storytelling walks, parent-child workshops, booklets-games, guided tours.

“I went for a ride in Granville on board the Granvillaise. I have to tell you about it. At the end of the pier, I jumped into a dinghy, and here I am sailing.

I passed the pier, we are in the open sea, and it is then, with the swing of the large waves, that I think of examining my crew.”

Victor Hugo.
